Unveiled on December 9, 2005, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' new 324-seat Family Theater provides a new home for world-class family theater performances for the nation's youth and continues the Kennedy Center's $125 million commitment to performing arts education for adults and children alike.

"This new venue" said Michael Kaiser, president of the Kennedy Center, "expands the Kennedy Center's ability to produce and present excellent works for young people." The inauguration of the Kennedy Center's state of the art 324-seat Family Theater facility coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Kennedy Center's youth oriented Performances for Young Audiences series.

Designed by the architectural firm Richter Cornbrooks Gribble, Inc. of Baltimore, the new theater is located on the site formerly occupied by the AFI Film Theater. Its construction spanned 11 months, and incorporates the most modern theatrical innovations available, including: premium audio technologies; a computerized rigging system; and a digital video projection system.

Terrence McNally's Nights at the Opera: Golden Age

Description:

Terrence McNally's Nights at the Opera

Washington Premiere
Golden Age
By Terrence McNally
Directed by Walter Bobbie

From comedies and dramas to musical theater and movies, Terrence McNally has secured his place among the great modern playwrights. McNally has earned four Tony Awards (Ragtime, Master Class, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Kiss of the Spider Woman) and written theater hits from Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune to The Full Monty. For the 2009–2010 Theater season, the Kennedy Center presents The Lisbon Traviata, Master Class, and Golden Age, a special collection of three McNally plays on one of his favorite subjects--the opera.

Produced through a grant from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, Terrence McNally's Golden Age comes to the Center fresh from its world premiere at Philadelphia Theatre Company. A tale of operatic intrigue, Golden Age takes place backstage at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris on the evening of the premiere of Vincenzo Bellini's I Puritani. Assembled are the composer, his faithful friend Francesco Florimo, and the four singers known the world over as The Puritani Quartet. Bellini thought this opera would cement his supremacy over his rival Gaetano Donizetti. It was to be his last.

The production features the ensemble cast of Rebecca Brooksher as Grisi, Jeffrey Carlson as Bellini, Roe Hartrampf as Florimo, Marc Kudisch as Tamburini, Hoon Lee as Lablache, Christopher Michael McFarland as Rubini, Benjamin Cook as Page, and Amanda Mason Warren as Malibran.

Golden Age features set design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Richard St. Clair, lighting design by Jason Lyons, and sound design by Ryan Rumery.
