About the Program
General Director Plácido Domingo takes the podium to launch WNO's golden 50th season with a salute to the 150th anniversary of Verdi's glorious grand opera. Set in French-occupied Sicily in 1282, nationalistic Sicilian patriot Procida returns from exile to lead a rebellion. His young lieutenant Arrigo--the illegitimate son of the French governor Monforte--saves his father from assassination only to be condemned as a traitor by his captured comrades. Having persuaded his father to pardon the prisoners, Arrigo prepares to wed his fellow rebel, Elena, while the unforgiving Procida plots terrible vengeance.
